Emasculating Men

Original 6/2009 Post: Why is it that its ok to make fun and yell at Men on TV but not Women? I don’t think it should be ok for either. I don’t really know what is going on with the whole “Jon and Kate plus 8” think I’ve only seen 1 or 2 episodes and honestly can’t remember much about them to be honest. However with everything in the media you can’t ignore the situation. From what I’ve heard (who knows whats true its ‘reality TV’) Kate is constantly yelling on the show. What if that was reversed what if Jon was the one yelling? Would anyone watch it? Would it have been canceled? Why do we as a culture think its ok to de-masculate men in this way? Commercials are another big offender in this area. Our young people need men to look up to and respect. They shouldn’t be taught that its ok to treat them this way… Biblicly Men are to be the head of the household. How can this happen when all we do is put them down? Updated 3/23/16: Its been over 6 years since I wrote this post and apparently other people are wondering the same thing. This is consistently one of the most read entries on the blog. So lets think about this, have things changed? As far as TV goes I honestly don’t know, we don’t have cable and I only watch things via streaming, therefore I pick what I watch and the shows I choose treat people fairly (in Hells Kitchen they ALL get yelled at lol.) What about the shows I don’t watch? I have no idea. What I have seen is the growth of a feminist movement. Whether or not you like the terminology I think we can all agree we still have some changes to make. However as we are pushing for change I’m seeing a lot of men being lumped in to categories unfairly.  We need to make sure that as we are advocating for equality we are doing so by raising up women, not tearing down men. Here is what I do know, the basic principal I stated 6 years ago is still true. If a show/podcast/whatever is a female ripping on a male, its pretty much tolerated. If a show/podcast/whatever is a male ripping on females it would blow up the internet so fast, it would make your head spin.  I also know that abuse towards men is severely under reported, when reported is rarely followed up with at the same intensity as with cases against women. So something still isn’t right. I don’t understand why as a nation (not picking on any one person, this isn’t EVERYONE) we can’t build one group up without tearing another one down. So I still don’t have  a solution…but I do think as long a we are aware of it, and don’t support the public forums that belittle men  at some point people will take notice and at least the superficial things like TV programing will start changing. It might take bigger moves than that to change the system…..
