Running, What if I don’t want to lose weight?

I had someone ask me last week how to run without losing weight.  Interesting question right? Why would anyone run if they didn’t have to? I would, I love it, its my stress reliever. I love the high and honestly I loving being able to say I’ve run 2- 1/2 marathons (3 in June!) All of that being said, I don’t need to lose one more pound. I’m happy with where I’m at number wise. Would I like a little more muscle? Sure!

So before I go into what I do here is the standard disclosure: I’m not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. This information has all worked for me, but may not work for you. Always check with your doctor before starting a new exercise or eating plan.

Now lets get right to it, its actually pretty simple you need to eat the calories you burn. Use a program like My Fitness Pal, type in all your information and tell it you want to maintain your weight and it will let you know how many calories you need to eat for maintenance. Then when you do a 30 min run and burn say 300 calories make sure your eating that on top of your base amount.  For example if it tells you to eat 2,000 calories per day and you burn 300 you now need to eat 2,300 calories for that day.

Make sure the food your eating as extra calories are healthy fats and proteins as well as fruits and veggies. You body will use all the resources it can when you run might as well fuel it with the best.  Just because you are burning off all of those calories doesn’t give you the right to binge on junk. Well not every time you run at least, we all have to splurge once in a while.
