As a runner I’m always looking for a way to stay hydrated, when in training simply not running on hot days isn’t an option. Now that I’m a mom I’m realizing that exercise isn’t the only thing leaving me dehydrated…. breastfeeding, caffeine and just general forgetfulness also contribute to this problem. However sports drinks aren’t the answer I’m looking for (too much sugar and chemicals) and my current hydration supplement is great for my short-mid range runs but I need something more for the long runs.
After a little research and a lot of talk from fellow runners I was interested in Oral IV, then I got the chance to review it! I didn’t tell the hubby it was coming and when he saw me open the package he was estactic. I didn’t know it but he had been doing some research himself in to hydration supplements (he doesn’t like my fizzy kind) for days he did extreme workouts or played softball in the heat.
So what is it?
” ORAL I.V. is a revolutionary hydration aid product based on a proprietary formula of crystalloid electrolytes and purified water. ORAL I.V. does not contain any sugars, caffeine or stimulants, additives, preservatives or artificial ingredients.”
What does that mean? Its something you take along with your normal hydration method (water) to help enhance its effectiveness.
Why use Oral I.V.?
Many hydration aids out there have long lists of extra ingredients that I don’t want to consume. What is the point of a lot of dyes and chemicals in my water? They aren’t going to help me stay hydrated and isn’t that the goal? Oral I.V. is made of natural ingredients and that for me is a big deal. Also it works.
My experience
I’ve used it while running and felt great before during and after, but its hard to ‘compare’ when you are using things one run to the next. However I get headaches when I’m dehydrated and the other day I got one bad. It was hot out and I was outside for a birthday party for the better part of 5 hours. I thought I did ok at hydrating but the next day I realized I was wrong. Right in the middle of work, BOOM pounding headache. Normally this would take me all day to remedy just drinking water however I happened to have a tube in my bag so I added it two my water. Two bottles later (48 oz) I was feeling great!
Bottom line
Because of the price personally I don’t think these are an everyday workout kind of thing. I think these are great for more intense workouts, really hot days, long workouts/games/tournament days or anything else that can dehydrate you more than ‘normal.’ Personally I will be keeping some on hand for my 1/2 marathon training and long hot paintball tournaments.
